City’s first league defeat opens the way for Arsenal to join them on 21 points, while Liverpool move fourth.

Arsenal finished Premier League round eight level with Manchester City on 21 points after beating Everton 2–0 on 24 October; City stayed first on goal difference. The closing 0–0 draw between Sunderland and Leeds United on 25 October left Leeds seventh on 11 points and Sunderland bottom on five.
City had entered the round three points clear after winning their first seven league games. Aston Villa’s 2–1 victory on 24 October ended that perfect start and gave Arsenal the chance to close the gap. The round ran from 23 to 25 October.
| Club | Position | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Leeds United | 7th | 11 |
| Sunderland | 20th | 5 |
Sunderland entered the round bottom with one league win. Strong winds from Storm Boelo disrupted both teams’ passing. Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford kept out several Sunderland chances, including a close-range effort after a short back-pass, while Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs turned a late low shot around the post with a one-handed save.

The one-match suspension follows his dismissal against Tottenham and will not rule him out of Chelsea’s October 31 Premier League game against Manchester United.

Nicolas Jackson scored both Aston Villa goals at Villa Park on 24 October, opening the scoring in the sixth minute and restoring Villa’s lead in the 60th after Erling Haaland’s 52nd-minute equaliser. City suffered their first league defeat of the 2026/27 season, while Villa reached 11 points and provisionally moved sixth.
Jackson’s opener followed a City defensive mistake. For the winner, he helped move the ball forward, then met a return pass with a first-time shot that went through the goalkeeper. Villa had taken only one point from their opening four league games before recovering to reach 11 from eight.
Defending champions Arsenal beat Everton at the Emirates Stadium. Ezri Konsa scored his first Arsenal goal in the seventh minute after Everton failed to clear a corner, and Gabriel Magalhães headed in the second in the 68th. City remained first because of their better goal difference—the number of goals scored minus goals conceded.
Tottenham beat Chelsea 2–0 at Stamford Bridge on 24 October. Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders punched a corner into his own net in the 77th minute. Cole Palmer received a second yellow card three minutes later, leaving Chelsea with 10 players, before Mathys Tel scored in the 87th minute after carrying the ball forward from his own half.
Tottenham’s second consecutive league victory provisionally lifted them to 12th. It was their first league win at Stamford Bridge since 2018 and Chelsea’s first home league defeat of the season.
Fulham also earned consecutive league wins, beating Coventry City 1–0 on 24 October through Oscar Bobb’s 80th-minute goal.
Hull drew 1–1 with Brentford on 25 October. Oli McBurnie scored a 24th-minute penalty after Aaron Hickey fouled Tim Iroegbunam while trying to clear the ball. It was McBurnie’s first Premier League goal for more than 900 days.
Dango Ouattara equalised in the 63rd minute from Igor Thiago’s pass. Hull kept their unbeaten home record but went a seventh game without victory. Brentford recorded a fourth consecutive away draw. Hull finished the match tenth and Brentford sixth.
Newcastle United won 2–0 at Crystal Palace on 25 October, with Will Osula and Harvey Barnes scoring after half-time. Newcastle initially moved seventh, before Leeds completed their match, while Palace were left fourth-bottom.
Liverpool beat Brighton 2–0 at Anfield on 25 October. Pascal Gross’s own goal in the 17th minute and Alexander Isak’s finish four minutes later left Liverpool one point behind third-placed Brighton.
Florian Wirtz’s shot deflected off Gross for the opener. The goal was officially credited as a Gross own goal, rather than the Wirtz goal initially listed in the live commentary. Isak scored his sixth league goal of the season as Liverpool secured a fourth consecutive league win.
The defeat ended Brighton’s four-match league winning run, during which they had scored 15 goals without conceding.
Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson scored in AFC Bournemouth’s 3–0 win at Manchester United on 25 October. Bournemouth rose to 13th, while United were left 16th, one point above the relegation zone—the bottom three places.
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick disputed the free-kick decision against his team. Speaking to Sky Sport in comments carried by Armsport, he said the opposing player had not been close enough to United’s defender for a foul to be given.
Carrick said United had failed to change the match after half-time. He felt one goal could have brought the crowd behind his team, but described Bournemouth’s third as the decisive blow.
Ipswich Town opened the round with a 1–1 draw against Nottingham Forest at Portman Road on 23 October. Forest entered nineteenth, with one win from seven league games and the division’s lowest scoring total. The draw provisionally moved Ipswich from tenth to ninth, above Hull, and left Ipswich on 10 points and Forest on six.
Neco Williams put Forest ahead in the 13th minute, arriving unmarked to finish Daniel Muñoz’s cross first time. Julio Enciso equalised in the 41st minute after intercepting Nikola Milenković’s underhit back-pass and finishing past the Forest goalkeeper.
Early in the second half, Ipswich’s Issa Diop brought down James McAtee. After a video assistant referee review, the referee awarded Forest a direct free kick and booked Diop, explaining that McAtee had knocked the ball to the right of goal. The Guardian’s live commentator questioned why Diop had not received a red card; the official decision remained a yellow.
Leif Davis twice cleared Forest efforts off the goal line, and Forest missed further chances to regain the lead. Williams later went off after landing awkwardly while keeping the ball in play.
