De Miguel collided with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during the November 2 match. The forward suffered a cardiac arrest and was taken to intensive care.
Under Spanish law, deaths from nonnatural causes, including accidents, are subject to judicial investigation. The police homicide division opened proceedings, a routine step after such a death.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife chief prosecutor José Luis Sánchez-Jáuregui told EFE that criminal proceedings were unlikely because the collision occurred during play. A formal legal complaint could still be brought, The Guardian said.
ESPN reported that the precise medical cause of Jesús de Miguel’s death was not immediately disclosed. UEFA said a moment of silence would be observed at all its matches that week.
Owono came out of his area to challenge for a long ball De Miguel was trying to reach in the seventh minute of stoppage time. The goalkeeper received a straight red card, and the match was abandoned with the score at 2–2.
Armenia national-team forward Hrant-Leon Ranos also plays for Tenerife. Owono could face a 12-game ban under federation protocols, The Guardian said; the disciplinary committee is due to decide his sanction.
The Spanish Football Federation extended the postponement of Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina fixtures to 3–5 November 2026, as a mark of respect and solidarity. The affected fixtures include first-round matches in the Copa del Rey and third-round matches in the Copa de la Reina.
In its earlier account, Armsport said the federation had postponed all matches scheduled for 3 November in tribute to De Miguel.
Tenerife has asked to postpone its next two games, against Granada on Saturday and Badajoz in the cup the following week. Andorra has requested a postponement of its weekend match against Mallorca. The federation said it would announce revised cup dates and kickoff times shortly.
