England won the Cerebral Palsy World Cup for the first time, beating hosts United States 2–1 after extra time in the football final in Atlanta.
The United States took the lead from a corner with three minutes remaining. Sam Dewhirst equalised to send the final into extra time, the additional playing period used to settle the tied match. David Porcher then scored the winner after Dewhirst’s shot was saved.
In comments published by BBC Sport, England head coach Jack Rutter said the players and staff had made considerable sacrifices to reach that point.
We were coming here with hope of maybe winning a medal and I can’t believe we actually won the World Cup for the first time.
The title is separate from the powerchair World Cup, in which England’s squad lost its final to France on Friday.

The 16-year-old was sent off at Fleetwood in his second start of the season, leaving Arsenal short of wing options before Sunday’s trip to Liverpool.
