Gareth Batty has stepped down as Surrey’s head coach to join Chennai Super Kings as an assistant coach in the Indian Premier League. Surrey won the County Championship in 2022, 2023 and 2024 under Batty; his departure leaves the club without a head coach for next season.
Batty became head coach in 2022, after retiring as a player and joining Surrey’s coaching staff in 2021. The club’s three straight titles were the first such run by any team in nearly 60 years. Surrey also reached T20 Finals Day twice during his time in charge.
The BBC Cricket account of the move says Batty’s departure ends a 21-year association with Surrey across his playing and coaching spells. Surrey is one of three teams without a head coach among the 10 in next season’s County Championship Division One. Batty’s successor at Surrey has not been named.

The 16-year-old was sent off at Fleetwood in his second start of the season, leaving Arsenal short of wing options before Sunday’s trip to Liverpool.
