Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says 4 tankers struck naval mines after using Strait of Hormuz routes it called “unauthorised”, Al Jazeera said on October 30.
Iran has severely restricted traffic through Hormuz since the war began on February 28, 2026. The waterway normally carries about 20% of global oil consumption.
Oman’s Maritime Security Centre said it had evacuated 25 crew members from the burning crude oil tanker RITI, Al Jazeera reported. It remained unconfirmed whether the RITI was among the tankers involved in the incidents reported by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
A separate account by CNA attributes the claims to statements from the Guards and Iran’s army on October 29.
| Force | Claim |
|---|---|
| Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps | 3 oil tankers exploded and caught fire after striking mines on the southern route during the preceding 24 hours. |
| Iran’s army | Another tanker caught fire after hitting mines east of the strait in an area the army called restricted and dangerous. |
When the alleged incidents happened and which flags the tankers flew remained unclear. Whether the claims concern additional incidents or overlap with earlier reports remains unverified.
The corps' naval arm, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, operates alongside the separate Iranian Navy.
UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a British maritime agency, said late on October 29 that it had received a report of a vessel fire northeast of Khasab, Oman. A small boat had attached explosive devices to the tanker’s hull above the waterline. The blasts caused an engine-room fire that temporarily disabled the vessel.
Hours later, UKMTO said the fire had been extinguished and the crew were safe.
The US military said on October 28, 2026, that it had cleared key routes through Hormuz. US Central Command, which runs military operations in the region, maintained that all mines in “primary transit routes” had been cleared.
Iran considers the southern corridor near Oman’s coast unauthorised. In its October 29 statement, the IRGC said that route was mined and urged vessel owners and crews not to rely on Central Command’s assurances.
On October 29, IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebi demanded independent evidence for the US mine-clearance claim.
The office says about 12 hectares have been cleared since December 2025. It values the 41 recovered parcels at no less than $1,696,000 and says they have returned to state and Sevan National Park possession and use.
