Janosch, the German author and illustrator who created Tiger, Bear and Tiger-Duck, has died at 95. His publisher Bernhard Feil announced his death on 4 November, saying he had died peacefully.
Feil told the German Press Agency on behalf of the artist’s wife that Janosch died on 3 November on Tenerife, the Spanish Canary Island where he had settled after the success of The Trip to Panama. Janosch was the pen name of Horst Eckert.
Janosch’s first children’s book, about a horse named Valek, appeared in 1960. His breakthrough came with The Trip to Panama, originally titled Oh, wie schön ist Panama. In the story, a little tiger and a bear set out to find paradise in Panama, only to travel in a circle and return to where they started.
The book won the German Youth Book Prize in 1979. Tiger and Bear share adventures in other stories too; when one is sick, the other looks after him. DW describes friendship and solidarity as prevailing in Janosch’s animal stories even when the characters lie or put their own interests first. Tiger-Duck is a striped wooden toy duck on wheels.
Janosch created more than 150 books, translated into more than 30 languages, DW said. German-language reports put the number of languages at around 40. His characters appeared on cups, stamps and jewelry, while his stories were adapted for film and television in German and English.
