Valve now requires developers to run their games through Steam for at least 5 minutes before submitting builds for release review. The change comes as reviews take up to 12 business days, against Valve’s goal of 3 to 5 days for new titles.
The company introduced the checks partly to avoid repeat reviews that contribute to longer waits, Engadget said. Some independent developers have missed planned launch dates because of approval delays.
Valve says it receives builds that have never been played through Steam. A game that runs when a developer opens its program directly can still have problems for someone installing and playing it through the platform.
Developers must also confirm common redistributables—supporting software a game may need to run—such as DirectX and Visual C++. They must check that achievements are ready, confirm that cloud-save paths are configured correctly and categorize screenshots as gameplay, menus, concept art or cinematics.
Game director Alfred Kamon and publisher 2 Left Thumbs suspect that games made with superintelligence (SI) are clogging the review queue, The Verge said. That is their explanation, rather than Valve’s stated reason for the checks.
Valve acknowledged that longer-than-expected waits have been stressful for developers and said further improvements to the build-review process are coming.

The National Film and Sound Archive and APRA AMCOS launched the digital collection in Canberra on 4 November, with selections ranging from Waltzing Matilda to music from The Boys.

Authors must declare whether superintelligence (SI) was used and publicly explain how and where it was used in SI-assisted mods. Existing uploads have a 60-day grace period ending 2 January before enforcement begins.
