Atkins built Detroit’s machine-driven electronic dance sound with Cybotron and as Model 500. His agency confirmed his death, prompting tributes to the musician credited with first calling the style techno.
Juan Atkins, whose recordings with Cybotron and as Model 500 helped establish Detroit techno, has died aged 64. He pioneered a hard, machine-driven electronic dance sound and was the first to call it “techno,” the Guardian said in its November 1 report.
Atkins’s agency, Greensmith Artists, confirmed his death to the dance music website Resident Advisor. The agency said he was found unresponsive in a Mexico City hotel room before a planned performance and was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.
His foundational work grew from friendships in Belleville, Michigan, where he met fellow musicians Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. Known as the Belleville Three, they helped establish Detroit as a center of electronic music.
Atkins formed Cybotron with Richard Davis in 1980. The duo combined synthesizers—electronic instruments that generate sound—with electronic percussion and futuristic themes. Their 1983 track “Clear” became a defining recording of the emerging Detroit sound.
The futuristic ideas had a source beyond science fiction. Atkins said a class about the transition from industrial society to technological society shaped his music. He also said his lyrics were intended to make social statements, giving listeners something to consider beyond dancing and romance.
After leaving Cybotron, Atkins recorded as Model 500. His 1985 track “No UFOs” combined machine-led rhythms with melodic, science-fiction-inspired atmospheres and became a foundational Detroit techno release. That same year, he founded Metroplex to release his music. The label later released work by other Detroit artists, including Anthony Shakir and DJ Bone.
Armenia’s culture ministry says the choir and trio performed jazz arrangements of Armenian folk songs, closing a program honoring linguist Hrachia Acharian and Yerevan’s Republic Square.
Atkins continued developing his sound as Infiniti and formed Borderland with electronic musician Moritz von Oswald. He revived Cybotron in 2023, releasing new music and performing live.
His recordings also reached beyond techno through sampling—the reuse of recorded sound in a new track. Missy Elliott built “Lose Control” around a sample of Cybotron’s “Clear.” Saunderson paid tribute to Atkins as “a true visionary who opened the door for so many of us, myself included.”
