From Spanish opening to international release
The film opened in Spain on 25 September, during Fiesta del Cine, when tickets were discounted to €3.5. It again led the Spanish box office in its sixth weekend, earning $1.4 million.
Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, the filmmaking duo known as Los Javis, wrote, directed and produced the film. It follows three men in different eras, connecting their lives through sexuality, desire, pain and inheritance. The pair’s earlier work includes the stage musical La llamada and its film adaptation Holy Camp!, as well as the television series Paquita Salas, Veneno and La mesías.
Netflix bought the US rights for a reported $5 million. The film is Spain’s official Oscar entry, and its directors won the best director prize at Cannes. It also won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival and received a British Independent Film Award nomination for best international independent film. It is scheduled to open in France on 16 December and will receive a Vanguard Tribute at the upcoming Gotham Film Awards in New York. Los Javis are also nominated for an audience award, while Guitarricadelafuente is up for nomination in the breakthrough performer category.
