Former Los Angeles Rams running back Lawrence McCutcheon died Friday, October 23, at 76, his family announced through the team, according to the Associated Press. His family said he had faced a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
The Rams drafted McCutcheon in 1972, and he played his first eight professional seasons with the team. When he left in 1980, he held the franchise’s career rushing record—the most total yards gained by running with the ball.
McCutcheon earned a Pro Bowl selection, an all-star honour, in each season from 1973 through 1977. He also led the Rams in rushing in each of those five seasons and received second-team All-Pro recognition from the Associated Press in 1974.
He appeared in 11 postseason games for the Rams. In the January 1980 Super Bowl, the league championship game, McCutcheon contributed with his arm: he threw a touchdown pass to Ron Smith that put Los Angeles ahead. The Pittsburgh Steelers rallied to win the championship.
After two more seasons with other teams, McCutcheon ended his playing career and became a Rams executive. His family said he spent another 32 years in the club’s front office.
McCutcheon became the Rams’ director of player personnel in 2003 and held that post until his retirement in 2016, shortly before the team moved back to Los Angeles.

The 16-year-old was sent off at Fleetwood in his second start of the season, leaving Arsenal short of wing options before Sunday’s trip to Liverpool.
