Jean-Philippe Mateta will miss three domestic matches after Crystal Palace’s appeal failed, but remains eligible for Crystal Palace’s Europa League games against Hoffenheim and Real Sociedad.

Crystal Palace have lost their appeal against Jean-Philippe Mateta’s red card, leaving the France forward suspended for three domestic matches. BBC Sport said on 3 November that the appeal had failed, after Mateta was sent off in Palace’s 2-0 defeat at Tottenham on 31 October.
Palace are 18th in the Premier League with seven points from nine matches. They have lost their last three league games, conceding nine goals and scoring none.
Mateta caught Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven on top of the ankle in the 13th minute, with the match still 0-0. Referee Michael Oliver initially showed Mateta a yellow card, but changed it to a straight red for serious foul play after a video assistant referee review sent him to the monitor.
Palace regarded the contact as accidental. BBC Sport said Mateta was understood to believe he had been watching the ball and had not seen Van de Ven.
Mateta will miss the Liverpool match on 8 November, the trip to Coventry on 21 November and the home game against Hull on 29 November. BBC Sport described the Liverpool fixture as being away; Sky Sports described it as a Palace home game at Selhurst Park.
The domestic ban does not stop Mateta playing in the Europa League. He is available for Palace’s home matches against Hoffenheim on 5 November and Real Sociedad on 26 November.
Palace’s French manager Pierre Sage, who previously managed Lyon and Lens, took the job in June 2026 on a three-year contract. After the Tottenham defeat, Sage said he was uncomfortable with Palace’s position, would not give up and did not decide how much time he would be given.

Britain’s Mika Stojsavljevic said she had only an hour’s notice before her first WTA Tour main-draw victory, which sends her into the second round.
BBC Sport said the Liverpool match could affect Sage’s long-term future at the club.
