The American claims her first victory in the season-opening women’s giant slalom, after 10 second- or third-place finishes across 13 World Cup seasons.

American skier Paula Moltzan won her first World Cup race on 24 October, beating Albania’s Lara Colturi by 0.01 seconds in the season-opening women’s giant slalom at Sölden, Austria. At 32, Moltzan became the oldest woman to earn a first Alpine skiing World Cup victory, Guardian Sport reported.
Moltzan made her World Cup debut in 2012. Before Sölden, she had finished second or third in 10 races across 13 seasons without winning.
The giant slalom result was decided by the combined time from two runs. Moltzan was fifth after the opening run, then completed her second descent in 1 minute 7.86 seconds. Her total of 2 minutes 14.82 seconds proved unbeatable; Colturi, sixth after the first run, finished in 2 minutes 14.83 seconds.
Germany’s Emma Aicher climbed from ninth to third. First-run leader Mikaela Shiffrin slid wide on a turn in increasingly foggy conditions and fell to seventh, ending her bid for a record-extending 111th World Cup victory.

Moltzan changed ski suppliers in May, ending an 18-year association with French manufacturer Rossignol to join Austria’s Van Deer–Red Bull Sports. She became the brand’s first female racer. After the win, Moltzan said the summer’s work developing her skis felt as though it was paying off.
Shiffrin has described the new campaign as an “exploration season”. She plans to race less frequently in her signature slalom discipline, with giant slalom among her priorities. She holds the women’s record of 22 giant slalom victories but has not won in the discipline since December 2023.

The appeal tribunal removed an additional suspended spectator ban, but each club must still play its next home Scottish Cup tie without fans and pay the visiting side £100,000.
