An Olympic federation has awarded Russia a global event for the first time since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, choosing Moscow for 2030.

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced on Sunday, 25 October, that Moscow will host the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships. The decision follows the federation’s confirmation four months earlier that Russian athletes would again be eligible to compete in its events.
The award is the first by an Olympic federation for a global event in Russia since the country’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, BBC Sport said. No world championships in an Olympic sport, summer or winter, have been held in Russia since the war began. Moscow last hosted the weightlifting world championships in 1983.
The IWF named hosts for four world championships across junior, youth and senior levels. The two senior hosting awards went to:
| Year | Host city and country |
|---|---|
| 2029 | Ahmedabad, India |
| 2030 | Moscow, Russia |
In July, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) provisionally lifted the Russian Olympic Committee’s suspension, which had been imposed following the invasion of Ukraine. That decision potentially opened the way for Russian athletes to represent their country at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

The 16-year-old was sent off at Fleetwood in his second start of the season, leaving Arsenal short of wing options before Sunday’s trip to Liverpool.

The IOC said in July that it had not decided whether Russia could display its flag and colours or use its anthem at the Olympics. It also said it would continue not to organise IOC events in Russia or invite Russian government or state officials to its events.
Ukraine has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, seeking to overturn the decision lifting the Russian Olympic Committee’s suspension.
The 2026 IWF World Championships in Ningbo, China, are scheduled for 27 October to 8 November, with five Ukrainian athletes listed to compete.
The Moscow championships will also serve as a qualifying event for the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane, Australia, making the 2030 competition part of weightlifters' route to those Games.

The appeal tribunal removed an additional suspended spectator ban, but each club must still play its next home Scottish Cup tie without fans and pay the visiting side £100,000.
