Northern Ireland has fallen to 51st in UEFA’s association rankings, putting the Irish Premiership on course to have three European qualification places rather than four in 2028–29. The Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL) says the final position remains subject to UEFA’s rankings and entry arrangements.
Iberia 1999’s 1–1 home draw with Mjallby in the Conference League on Thursday moved Georgia above Northern Ireland, pushing Northern Ireland outside the top 50, BBC Sport reported. Currently, the Irish Premiership’s top two clubs and the Irish Cup winners qualify for European competition, with a fourth place decided through an end-of-season play-off.
UEFA allocates places in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League using a five-year performance ranking, known as the association coefficient. That means domestic league positions decide which clubs qualify, while the association’s European record determines how many places are available.
This season, Glentoran, Linfield and Coleraine were eliminated at their first stage. Larne, the last Irish Premiership club remaining, lost to Lincoln Red Imps in the Conference League play-offs after holding a two-goal aggregate lead—the combined advantage across the tie.
NIFL chief executive Gerard Lawlor called the prospective loss “a major concern and a potentially significant setback”. He said European football offers opportunities for clubs, players and supporters, alongside financial investment that benefits the wider game. Although individual clubs had produced some excellent performances, he said their collective results had not been good enough.
Lawlor urged clubs to reconsider the timing of the season, investment, player development and domestic competition. Poor European results are one factor in the ongoing debate about summer football; changing the calendar would require support from 75% of NIFL’s 38 member clubs.
