Philippe Jaenada has won the 2026 Prix Goncourt for L’Inconnue du quai de Javel (The Unknown Woman of the Quai de Javel). The Académie Goncourt, the Paris-based literary organization, announced the result at the Drouant restaurant in Paris on 3 November.
Jaenada received 6 votes to 3 for Sylvain Prudhomme, whose competing novel was De l’autre côté du lac. Jaenada had previously appeared on Goncourt shortlists 4 times without reaching the final selection, Le Monde said.
A novel revisits an unsolved murder
The novel reconstructs the murder of Louise Cansot, a 29-year-old Breton woman who posed for artists in Paris. She was found dead on 7 September 1949, and police never established her murderer’s identity.
Jaenada suggests a murderer’s name, but that is the novel’s proposed solution, not a police identification. The Guardian describes the book as an empathetic account that also challenges the original portrayal of Cansot. The police report called her a woman of “ill repute,” while contemporary newspapers speculated that she was a sex worker or drug addict.
Investigations into old news stories became Jaenada’s trademark with Sulak in 2013, about a robber and escape artist who targeted jewelry stores in the 1980s. The winning book is his 13th novel.
An authorship dispute preceded the award
Earlier in the competition, the Académie Goncourt removed Thélyson Orélien’s C’était ça ou mourir from its longlist amid allegations that superintelligence (SI) had written almost all of it. His publisher, Boréal, severed ties with him after an investigation. Orélien denied using SI to write the novel, the Guardian said.
The Goncourt brings a symbolic cash award of €10 (about $11). Its larger benefit for the winning author is the recognition and increased book sales that accompany the prize.
