The operator said the ship remained safe and operational as it assessed the incident’s impact. India’s shipping minister described a projectile attack and said all 25 crew members were safe.
India’s Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier Al Mayeda had been targeted in a projectile attack. He said all 25 crew members were safe, Bloomberg said.
The ship’s owner, Qatar Gas Transport Company, known as Nakilat, had described the strike as an impact from “unidentified objects” in the Gulf on Friday evening, 30 October, the latest attack on commercial shipping since the US-Israel war on Iran began in February. In its November 1 statement, the company said no crew members were injured and no environmental damage was reported, Al Jazeera said.
Nakilat said the vessel remained safe and operational. The company was still assessing the incident’s impact. Nakilat provides towage and marine support services to Qatari ports and terminals.
Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attack, saying it threatened maritime navigation and the security of global energy supplies. The ministry said investigations were underway to establish the circumstances and identify those responsible. It said Qatar reserved the right to take all necessary measures to protect its property and safeguard its interests. Attacks on shipping have increased since the United States reimposed a blockade on Iran’s southern ports in July; at least 29 ships were hit in October, the worst month of the war.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says the added import cost since the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz bought no extra energy. She argues Europe should import less fuel.
