Democratic state auditor Rob Sand is projected to become Iowa’s next governor, defeating Republican Zach Lahn. The Guardian attributed the election call to the Associated Press. Sand is the first Democrat to win the office since 2006.
The result reverses the party’s fortunes in the previous governor’s election: in 2022, Republican incumbent Kim Reynolds defeated Democrat Deidre DeJear to win a second full term with 58% of the vote.

Sand entered the race as Iowa’s only Democrat holding statewide office. Lahn was a political newcomer backed by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Make America Healthy Again movement. Lahn won the Republican primary over a candidate endorsed by Donald Trump.
At his victory party, Sand said he intended to bring people together to improve water quality, accountability and the political process. He presented cooperation between the parties as the approach he would take beginning in January.
