Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo has won France Football’s “Ballon d’Or of All Time” public vote for his 2007–08 Manchester United season. He finished ahead of Lionel Messi, with ESPN describing the result as narrow after a monthlong online vote.
Ronaldo scored 42 goals across all competitions that season, helping United win both the Premier League and Champions League. Those performances earned him his first annual Ballon d’Or, awarded on December 2, 2008.
Fans chose individual Ballon d’Or-winning years from players who had won the annual award more than once, rather than judging entire careers, Goal said. Ronaldo’s first win topped the ranking ahead of Messi, who had already won a record eight annual Ballons d’Or.
Fans voted on the official Ballon d’Or website.

The poll opened on October 9 (RTP). The results were published on the evening of October 28.
France Football clarified that the popularity poll would not lead to an award at the official Ballon d’Or ceremony. The retrospective recognition is not the annual 2026 Ballon d’Or and does not add to Ronaldo’s five annual wins.
Portugal’s Football Federation congratulated Ronaldo on the recognition. Manchester United and Real Madrid, two of his former clubs, also acknowledged it.

The appeal tribunal removed an additional suspended spectator ban, but each club must still play its next home Scottish Cup tie without fans and pay the visiting side £100,000.
