The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has banned Ethiopian marathon runner Ruti Aga for six years, Guardian Sport reported on October 22. The sanction comprises two years for using the banned substance methylprednisolone and four years for tampering with the anti-doping process.
Aga won the Tokyo Marathon in 2019. The AIU said she tested positive after winning a half-marathon in China in March.
Aga said a doctor in Ethiopia had given her methylprednisolone to treat knee pain. The AIU said its investigation found that the clinic named on her prescription did not exist and that a family member who was not a registered doctor had signed the document.
The AIU said the 32-year-old did not respond to the substance-use and tampering charges. It consequently issued the six-year ban without a hearing, rather than after a hearing in which Aga contested the charges.

The 16-year-old was sent off at Fleetwood in his second start of the season, leaving Arsenal short of wing options before Sunday’s trip to Liverpool.
