A British Horseracing Authority disciplinary panel fined Sedgefield Racecourse £6,500 after finding that it breached five instructions in horse racing’s Rules of Racing. The case follows a March incident at the County Durham course in which an injured jockey was taken to hospital in a horsebox, as BBC Sport described.
A doctor had cleared the jockey to race again, but he said he was still in pain. A doctor then advised him to go to accident and emergency. By that time, all ambulance crews had left. Medical staff followed the horsebox in a car rather than travelling with him.
The panel said the rules required qualified medical staff to accompany the jockey during a proper transfer to hospital. It also said he was in too much pain to get into the car following the horsebox.
Other failings included a telephone line that did not work and rooms the panel described as worn and not conveying a clean clinical area. Sedgefield Racecourse acknowledged “errors and shortcomings”. An inspection in April found “significant progress” at the course.

The 16-year-old was sent off at Fleetwood in his second start of the season, leaving Arsenal short of wing options before Sunday’s trip to Liverpool.
