Cycling’s governing body, the UCI, has decided to allow points earned across different disciplines to count toward team rankings, Velo reported on October 23. Velo expects the decision to give teams a competitive reason to support riders who race on more than one surface: those results can contribute to the team’s ranking. The points formula, the precise team rankings covered and the implementation date remain unspecified.
Previously, road teams were often reluctant to let their leading riders race off-road because they perceived a risk to road-racing ambitions, according to Velo. Several teams already support mixed programmes. The expected incentive from ranking points is not a demonstrated effect of the decision.
Jolanda Neff’s planned move offers an example of a mixed programme, rather than proof of the rule’s effects. The Tokyo Olympic mountain-bike champion is set to join Fenix-Premier Tech in 2027 without giving up mountain biking, Velo reports.
Fenix-Premier Tech’s structure allows Neff to combine road racing, mountain biking and cyclocross—racing on mixed-surface circuits. Her next planned step is the move to that team in 2027, where she can return to road competition while maintaining her off-road programme.
