Armenia’s Vazgen Tevanyan defeated Bulgaria’s Shamil Mamedov on 29 October to reach his first senior world final in the 65 kg category at the 2026 World Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. He will face US wrestler Bowen Bassett for gold on 30 October.
Tevanyan won the European title and a World Championships bronze medal in 2023.
Tevanyan fractured a finger during the semifinal but continued and won, Armsport said. NEWS.am Sport identified the injury as a fracture of his right little finger.
The accounts give different semifinal scores: Armenpress gives Tevanyan’s victory as 3–1, while Armsport and NEWS.am Sport give it as 2–1. Mamedov is a World Championships bronze medallist.

Sportaran said Tevanyan trailed 1–2 with four seconds remaining in the quarterfinal. Referees penalised Amouzad Khalili for passivity—avoiding active engagement—and the score changed to 3–2 in Tevanyan’s favour.
The 28 October draw account listed the opener as the round of 32 and named the Mongolian opponent Bat-Erdene Byambasuren, rather than Zeneemeder Byambasuren as used in the bout result. The draw had listed Ukraine’s Andrii Dzhelep or Dastanbek as Tevanyan’s possible round-of-16 opponent.
Five more Armenian wrestlers are scheduled to begin competing on 30 and 31 October.
