World wrestling championships October 30: Harutyunyan and Andreasyan lose

Armenia’s Arsen Harutyunyan and Arman Andreasyan ended their medal bids at the World Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, on 30 October. Vazgen Tevanyan finished with silver, securing Armenia’s first medal at the 2026 championships.

Harutyunyan and Andreasyan cannot return for bronze

Harutyunyan opened with an early 10–0 qualifying win over a Mexican opponent in the 61 kg class, then lost to Zelimkhan Abakarov in the round of 16.

In the 70 kg round of 16, Andreasyan lost 1–2 to Turkey’s Ferhat Kilich after conceding a point in the final seconds.

Repechage gives wrestlers beaten by a finalist another route to bronze. Harutyunyan needed Abakarov to reach the final, while Andreasyan needed Kilich to do so. Neither opponent reached the final, closing that route for both Armenian wrestlers.

Bassett and Snyder win gold

American Bo Bassett won his 1st senior world title by defeating Tevanyan. Fellow American Kyle Snyder claimed his 5th world title against Japan’s Arash Yoshida: the finalists finished level on points, and wrestling’s tiebreaking rules gave Snyder the victory.
