Armenia’s Garnik Cholakhyan finished 18th overall with 285 kg in the men’s 65 kg category at the World Weightlifting Championships in Ningbo, China, on 28 October. North Korea’s Pak Myong Jin won the title with 331 kg, one kilogram ahead of defending champion Muhammed Furkan Ozbek of Türkiye.
Cholakhyan was Armenia’s first competitor at the championships, which began on 27 October and are the first qualifying competition for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Pak lifted 187 kg on his final clean-and-jerk attempt to overtake Ozbek. The lift and his 331 kg total were world records. Ozbek had briefly held the total record with 330 kg.
Weightlifters receive separate medals for the snatch and clean and jerk, while the overall title goes to the highest combined total. In the snatch, the athlete raises the bar overhead in one movement. In the clean and jerk, the athlete first brings it to the shoulders, then drives it overhead.
