Australia’s Molly Picklum took the World Surf League women’s rankings lead by winning the Portugal Pro on Friday, while Griffin Colapinto won the men’s final and climbed to third, the Guardian reports. The results leave both title races with two events remaining.
Picklum entered Portugal as the reigning world champion but had reached only one final this season. Her victory at Supertubos Beach was her first of the year.
Picklum initially trailed Caitlin Simmers, the 2024 world champion. She took the lead with a wave scored at 7.83 out of 10, riding inside the hollow section of an overhead wave—a manoeuvre known as a barrel or tube. Simmers also completed tube rides but finished behind on the two-wave total.
| Surfer | Two-wave total |
|---|---|
| Molly Picklum | 13.33 |
| Caitlin Simmers | 12.84 |
In the men’s final, Colapinto started strongly before Gabriel Medina moved ahead with two barrel rides. Colapinto then answered with the decisive wave: riding with his back to the wave’s face, he stayed inside the tube throughout the ride and emerged to earn 9.43 out of 10. That score gave him a lead he held until time expired, according to the Guardian.
The win was Colapinto’s third at the Portugal event, following victories in 2022 and 2024.

The 16-year-old was sent off at Fleetwood in his second start of the season, leaving Arsenal short of wing options before Sunday’s trip to Liverpool.

The Guardian reports that the tour next visits a new stop in the Philippines before ending at Pipeline in December. Pipeline will offer 1.5 times the usual points, giving the final event extra weight in deciding the championships.

The appeal tribunal removed an additional suspended spectator ban, but each club must still play its next home Scottish Cup tie without fans and pay the visiting side £100,000.
