The former 23andMe holding company agrees to settle allegations that inadequate security led to a 2023 breach exposing nearly seven million people’s sensitive information.

Chrome Holding Co., the holding company formerly known as 23andMe, has agreed to pay California $6 million to resolve allegations that it failed to adequately secure customers' personal and genetic data, The Hacker News reported on October 22.
The allegations concern a 2023 breach that exposed sensitive information belonging to nearly seven million people. California accused the company of security failures that led to the breach.
California’s attorney general’s office also outlined options concerning genetic data or samples maintained by 23andMe Research Institute, a separate entity from the holding company. The office said consumers can request deletion of their data, destruction of their test sample or withdrawal of permission for their genetic data to be used for research.
