American Cinema Editors names Carpenter, Koehler and Nelson as honourees

American Cinema Editors (ACE) has selected filmmaker John Carpenter for its Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year award. Editors Bonnie Koehler and Christopher Nelson will each receive a Career Achievement award at the organisation’s 77th Eddie Awards.

The selections recognise broader professional achievement rather than an individual competing film or television episode. ACE’s calendar announcement, published on June 3, described the Golden Eddie as recognising distinguished achievement in the art and business of film, and the Career Achievement awards as recognising outstanding film editors.

Why ACE chose the three recipients

In comments published by Variety on October 28, ACE president Sabrina Plisco said Carpenter’s honour celebrates his collaboration with editors. She praised his understanding of rhythm, tension and restraint, and his trust in editors to help shape his films. Carpenter’s directing credits include “Halloween” (1978), “The Thing” and “Escape from New York.”

Previous Golden Eddie recipients include Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino and Steven Spielberg.

Koehler’s career spans more than 40 years, with credits including “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “The Empire Strikes Back” and “L.A. Law.” Plisco highlighted Koehler’s Emmy nomination for “L.A. Law” and her ACE Eddie nomination for “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”

Nelson has worked as a producer, director and editor on more than 70 television series, movies and pilots. He won a Primetime Emmy for editing the “Lost” series finale and earned further Emmy nominations for work including “Six Feet Under” and “Mad Men.” Plisco said Koehler and Nelson were admired by other editors and had both given generously to the editing community.
