Amazon announces SageMaker sessions for custom model training

Amazon announced general availability of SageMaker AI training sessions on October 22, 2026. The company says developers can write their own post-training procedure—further training an existing model for a task—without setting up or operating the graphics processing units (GPUs) that perform the heavy calculations.
SageMaker already offered managed customization methods in which users choose a model, supply data and adjust the available training settings. Amazon says the new sessions serve developers who need to change the training procedure itself, rather than fit their work into a prepackaged method.
A training loop is the repeated sequence of steps used to improve a model. According to Amazon, developers run that loop in their own Python environment and call SageMaker’s application programming interfaces (APIs) for operations that need GPUs. The model stays loaded on the service’s GPUs between calls.
Developers can define custom loss functions, which measure training errors, or reward functions, which score outputs. Their code can also connect a model to tools or simulators. This gives them control over how responses are generated, judged and used in the next model update.
Amazon illustrates the division of work with a reinforcement-learning loop, in which scores guide learning:

Amazon says SageMaker handles GPU allocation, work distributed across processors, recovery from failures and checkpoint storage. Checkpoints are saved training states: developers can preserve both model weights and optimizer state, which tracks how updates are calculated, to resume in a new session. A separate merged-model save prepares the trained model for deployment.
Amazon says billing is based on tokens—the units of text the model processes—rather than reserved GPU capacity. The meter stops while a reward function scores a batch in the developer’s environment. That pause concerns SageMaker’s GPU operations, not the cost of running the developer’s own scoring system. Amazon does not give exact token prices in the announcement.
Amazon places training sessions between its managed customization methods and options that give users more responsibility for computing infrastructure. Its comparison distinguishes them as follows:
| Option | Training control | Infrastructure |
|---|---|---|
| Managed customization APIs | Choose a model, supply data and adjust available settings | No instance selection or cluster management |
| Training sessions | Write the loop and call individual training operations | No instance selection or cluster management |
| SageMaker Training Jobs | Full training control | Temporary managed jobs; users select the instance type |
| SageMaker HyperPod | Full training control | Persistent managed clusters with advanced fault recovery |
Amazon announced support for OpenAI’s gpt-oss-20b, along with gemma-4-31B-it, Qwen3.6-27B and Qwen3.8-27B. The company directs developers to its training-session documentation to check which models are available in each AWS Region.
To begin, Amazon directs developers to check prerequisites and session quotas, then use its SageMaker Python SDK and training-session cookbook. The cookbook provides example training loops that developers can adapt with their own data and scoring functions. Amazon also advises stopping a session when work finishes: it continues to count against the concurrent-session quota until it is stopped or expires.
