Owners can buy software until January 31, 2027; Atari plans an update after the closure to let VCS functions run without its servers.

Atari plans to close its VCS software store on February 1, 2027, leaving January 31 as the final day to buy software. The company’s October 21 announcement also sets out a planned transition away from Atari’s servers before platform support ends, according to Tom’s Hardware.
Released in mid-2021, the modern VCS combines a games console and a personal computer. It already has a PC mode that can run alternative operating systems. That existing option is separate from the update Atari now promises for the console’s own software.
Atari says it plans to release an operating-system update after the closure that would move all functionality to owners' machines. According to the statement quoted by Tom’s Hardware, the update would remove dependence on Atari infrastructure for software and authentication—the checks that verify a user’s identity.
Atari also plans to give all players the Atari Homebrew App during the transition, Tom’s Hardware reports. The app is intended to let owners add games and developers build and share VCS apps independently, providing a way to add software beyond the official store.
The store closure comes first; the planned update follows. Atari says it will end support for the platform once that transition is complete.

The black, gold and green edition follows September’s sold-out preorders. Nintendo’s replenished launch-day stock also quickly sold out.
