Barbara Barrie, the actress whose work in “Breaking Away” earned an Oscar nomination, has died at 95. She died on 28 October at her Manhattan home, The Hollywood Reporter said, citing The New York Times.
IndieWire said Barrie’s daughter, Jane Harnick, told The New York Times that her mother had terminal cancer and that her death was medically assisted.
In the 1979 film “Breaking Away,” Barrie played Evelyn Stohler, the working-class mother of a young cycling enthusiast. The performance earned her an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress. She returned to the role in the 1980 television adaptation, earning an Emmy nomination in 1981.
Barrie had won the Cannes Film Festival’s best actress prize in 1964 for “One Potato, Two Potato.” She played Julie Cullen Richards, a divorced woman whose former husband seeks custody of their child after she marries a Black man. The story addressed the racial prejudice directed at their marriage.
On Broadway, she originated Sarah in the 1970 production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Company,” a musical about relationships and commitment. The role brought her a Tony nomination for best featured actress in a musical in 1971.
Television audiences also knew Barrie as Elizabeth, the title character’s wife in the detective sitcom “Barney Miller,” between 1975 and 1978. In the 1980 film “Private Benjamin,” she played the title character’s mother.
