Actor Bill Nighy has joined Caitríona Balfe in Alfonso Cuarón’s Apple TV horror-thriller series Ascension, Deadline said on October 26. Citing sources, the outlet said Nighy will play series regular Zac, a documentarian who hires Balfe’s character, Rose, to work with him on a new project.
The one-hour psychological horror thriller is inspired by Adam Nevill’s novel Last Days. Nighy brings an Academy Award nomination for best actor in Living and a supporting-actor BAFTA for Love Actually.
Rose is a documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother who excels at uncovering other people’s truths while struggling with her own. Her new project examines a mysterious 20th-century cult called the Church of Ascension. She finds refuge in its teachings before discovering something more sinister beneath them.
Natalie Erika James and Christian White are co-showrunners, overseeing the series’ creative work. They also write it with Alfonso Cuarón and Carlos Cuarón.
Production and release dates remain unspecified. James is set to serve as lead director, with Apple Studios as the studio and Anonymous Content also producing.

The black, gold and green edition follows September’s sold-out preorders. Nintendo’s replenished launch-day stock also quickly sold out.
