MGM+ has ordered eight episodes of The Black Tapes, a supernatural investigation drama starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Sosie Bacon has joined as co-lead, playing physicist Alex Regan opposite Coster-Waldau, Deadline said on 27 October.
Regan is a methodical physicist who teams up with Dr. Richard Strand, Coster-Waldau’s psychiatrist with a mysterious past. The pair set out to debunk cases involving hauntings, possessions, disappearances and sinister legends—the “black tapes” of the title.
In the story, their investigations uncover a hidden occult world and a centuries-old apocalyptic conspiracy. Bacon’s casting fills the other half of that central investigative partnership.
The series adapts the horror podcast created by Terry Miles and Paul Bae in 2015. NBC developed an earlier adaptation during the 2018–19 development cycle, but it did not reach the pilot, or test-episode, stage.
Coster-Waldau was nominated for an Emmy for playing Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones.
Variety said on 26 October that MGM+ plans to release the series in eight countries—the US, UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands—and Latin America.

The black, gold and green edition follows September’s sold-out preorders. Nintendo’s replenished launch-day stock also quickly sold out.
