CyberCartel used AI agents in attacks on more than 400 Latin American institutions, including banks and mobile payment apps, according to research by cybersecurity startup Straiker. The findings describe stolen passwords and customer data, as well as access to individuals’ bank accounts. Tom’s Hardware reported the findings on October 23, citing The Information.
Tom’s Hardware describes CyberCartel as active since at least 2012. The reported change is its adoption of AI to automate attacks in recent months, rather than the emergence of a new hacking group.
Straiker’s research links the attacks to AI agents—software that uses artificial intelligence to carry out tasks—including Anthropic’s Claude and SpaceX’s Grok. The research, as relayed by Tom’s Hardware, describes access to bank accounts with little input from the attackers.
It remains unclear which institutions make up the total of more than 400 or how the attack count and degree of automation were verified.
Tom’s Hardware reports that Straiker shared its findings with Anthropic and SpaceX. Anthropic had blocked CyberCartel’s access to Claude, while SpaceX was working to shut the group out of its services.
The October 23 report also links an agent from Moonshot AI to the attacks. Straiker was still trying to contact the company about the findings.
