Disney Live Action has acquired the film rights to Rebecca Ross’s fantasy-romance novel Divine Rivals after Paramount’s rights lapsed, Deadline said in its October 27, 2026 report. The original producers remain attached, but Disney is seeking a new screenwriter because it did not inherit the previous development work.
Paramount won the rights in June 2025 after a bidding war, with screenwriter Sofia Alvarez attached to adapt the book. The project was already in development before Skydance’s acquisition of Paramount became official in August 2025.
Divine Rivals follows two rival journalists who fall in love through a magical connection during a war among gods. It is the first book in Ross’s Letters of Enchantment series, followed by Ruthless Vows.
