Irish traditional musician Dónal Lunny has died aged 79. A post on his Facebook page confirmed that he died on Friday morning, 23 October, after a short stay at St James’s Hospital in Dublin. The Guardian reported that he died from cancer.
Lunny was a founding member of Planxty and also played with the Bothy Band and Moving Hearts. His contribution extended beyond performing: he produced 17 albums under his own label, Mulligan Records, according to the Guardian.
Lunny played several instruments but was best known for the bouzouki. Ireland’s president, Catherine Connolly, credited him with a central role in introducing the instrument into Irish music. She highlighted both his work in bands and his production career.
Connolly also recalled the lifetime achievement award he received in 2025. Ireland’s prime minister, Micheál Martin, said Lunny brought traditional and folk music to new audiences through Planxty and his other musical work.
