Etsy announces ban on AI-generated recipes and craft patterns

Etsy says uncertainty over AI content discourages buyers from shopping more often. Its announced rules will require sellers to show real items rather than simulated results.

Etsy announced on October 22 that it would ban recipes, craft patterns and other practical instructions created using artificial intelligence (AI), CNBC reported. Sellers will also have to show an actual item made by following their instructions, rather than an AI-generated or simulated result.
The marketplace has struggled in recent years to curb AI-made crochet patterns, CNBC reported. Instructional products are commonly sold as digital downloads, such as sewing or crochet patterns, which buyers follow to make a finished item.
Etsy said showing an item made from the instructions would help buyers know what to expect. Separately, sellers will be required to include at least one unedited photograph of the actual item they are selling. The company also said it is barring bot-generated listings created without human involvement.
Etsy attributed the changes to concerns about buyer and seller trust. The company said many active buyers cannot tell which items involve AI-generated content, making that uncertainty a top-three barrier to shopping more often. It also said sellers were concerned about their work appearing alongside items that use AI misleadingly, making their own creative role harder for buyers to recognize.
The timing of the new requirements remains unclear. The restrictions do not amount to a blanket ban on AI-generated work: Etsy said it will continue to allow AI art when sellers play a clear role in creating it and explain their process.
For sellers continuing to offer such work, Etsy said disclosure remains mandatory. They cannot present AI-generated work as handmade or entirely their own creation.
