Residents in Gaza say commercial deliveries have been suspended for about a week, pushing food prices higher. An October 25 account in the Guardian described markets running short of fresh produce and other essentials, with flour costing more than three times its previous price.
The shortages affect a population already facing widespread displacement: nearly a million displaced Palestinians in Gaza face water shortages and dire sanitary conditions. Humanitarian aid is also dwindling, leaving families increasingly vulnerable to another food crisis.
Sami Abu Rumi, displaced from Rafah to al-Mawasi in Khan Younis, said families were struggling to feed their children, keep them in school and obtain medical care. Destroyed homes and infrastructure had made daily survival a struggle, he said.
The reason for the reported suspension, the volume of deliveries affected and the exact flour prices remain unclear, as does when commercial deliveries might resume.
Israel’s forthcoming election is also shaping some residents’ plans. Karim Mareesh said a friend had postponed his son’s wedding until after the vote because he feared another term for the far-right government could bring renewed war and force him to flee again.
