Google adds notebook controls to Gemini chats

Google has added a Gemini Notebook Connected App that lets users manage notebooks and ask questions using their contents without leaving a Gemini chat, 9to5Google reported on October 23. A Connected App links another service’s functions to the conversation.

Gemini Notebooks were already available in the app’s side panel. The change adds chat-based controls rather than introducing notebooks for the first time.

What users can do in a chat

According to the report, users can make requests in everyday language to:

• Create, edit or delete notebooks.
• Add, update or delete sources—the material a notebook uses—including adding a copy of the current chat.
• List notebooks and their sources, retrieve information and save notes.
• Ask questions that use information from their notebooks, such as what the notebooks say about butterfly migration.

Who has access

The integration is available to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and users with personal Google accounts, 9to5Google reports. It is enabled by default globally except in the European Economic Area, where it is off by default.

The report says Gemini automatically detects when a relevant request calls for the Notebook Connected App, so users can request notebook actions directly in the conversation.
