GitHub says it has begun automatically setting eligible, unconfigured feature permissions on Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise plans according to each enterprise or organization’s selected global default. The change leaves explicitly enabled or disabled features untouched.
GitHub announced the policy in September. Its October 22, 2026 announcement begins enforcement for eligible generally available features—those released beyond preview—and supported capabilities in software used to access Copilot.
When enforcement reaches an enterprise or organization, eligible settings marked “Unconfigured” will take its selected default: “Enabled,” “Disabled,” or “Let organizations decide.” GitHub says this is a one-time application. Changing the global default later will not rewrite feature policies that are already set.
Administrators can still explicitly enable or disable individual features at any time. Preview features remain opt-in. If an administrator has opted into a preview, that choice stays in place when the feature becomes generally available. Otherwise, the default applies when the feature becomes eligible.
The policy covers eligible settings on the “Features & clients” and “MCP servers in Copilot” pages. Administrators can review the selected default under AI Controls → Copilot → Default policy for new features.
GitHub does not enumerate every eligibility rule or exception in its announcement and directs administrators to its default-availability documentation for details. Enforcement is scheduled to roll out through October 26, taking effect at different times for different enterprises and organizations.
