GitHub says its Bring Your Own Model preview no longer works in Visual Studio’s previous Ask and Agent modes. Users must switch to Agent Preview and re-add previously configured Ollama models after updating.
GitHub says Visual Studio 2026 users must use the new Agent (Preview) mode for Bring Your Own Model, a feature that lets them choose models through GitHub Copilot or their own deployments. The previous Ask and Agent modes no longer support the feature, making this a compatibility change for existing workflows.
Bring Your Own Model, shortened to BYOM, remains a preview feature rather than a generally available release. In its September update announcement, GitHub says users can use it whether or not they are signed in to GitHub. It is enabled by default in Visual Studio’s Community, Professional and Enterprise editions.
The new Agent (Preview) is distinct from the previous Agent mode. Selecting the older mode will no longer provide BYOM support, according to GitHub.
GitHub has not specified a precise affected Visual Studio build number in the announcement. For users updating their installation, it sets out two required changes:
