Google Wallet is beginning to let holders of passports from Estonia, Ireland, Italy and Spain create digital ID passes, 9to5Google reported on October 23. Support for the four countries is not yet widely available.
The additions follow support for passports from other countries, including the US. Google Wallet calls the passport-based digital credential an “ID pass,” and its uses vary by country.
For US passport-based passes, 9to5Google describes acceptance at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security checks through a contactless NFC scan or a QR-code scan. That acceptance applies specifically to US passes; where passes from the four newly added countries can be used remains unclear.
When the option is available, tap the plus button at the bottom of Google Wallet, then select “IDs & personal info” and “ID pass.” According to 9to5Google, registration requires scanning the passport’s information page and security chip, then recording a video of the holder’s face.
After submitting those details, users receive a notification when verification is complete.
