Greece’s parliament has approved a bill banning children under 15 from using social-media platforms from January 1, 2027. Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence Minister Dimitris Papastergiou says the Kid’s Wallet app can check users’ age without sharing their birth date or other personal details, DW reports.
The ban goes beyond existing rules on permission to process children’s personal data. Greece’s data-protection authority explains that, for online services offered directly to children, processing that relies on consent requires the child’s own consent from age 15, or a legal representative’s consent below 15. Those rules govern data processing, not access to social media.
Greece says the ban is intended to help parents curb “endless scrolling,” which it says deprives children of sleep, concentration and time with friends.
Papastergiou described Kid’s Wallet as a way to verify age—check whether a user meets an age limit. He said the app communicates only whether a user is over or under 15, not their date of birth or other personal data.
The minister also said the app had been established according to codes and technical specifications set by the European Union.
Greece is among seven European Union countries seeking an age-verification solution with the European Commission.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said platforms have two and a half months to devise a way to verify users’ ages while protecting their privacy, ahead of the January 1, 2027 start date.
