Tony Award winner Jonathan Groff will return to Broadway in The Amish Project, Jessica Dickey’s solo play directed by Sarna Lapine. Producers Robert Ahrens and Tom Kirdahy announced the production and its star on October 23, Deadline reported.
The role moves Groff from the large casts of Merrily We Roll Along and Just In Time to a production carried by one performer.
Groff said Dickey wrote the play in response to a tragedy at a one-room Amish schoolhouse in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, 20 years earlier that month. According to the production’s synopsis, the events happened just minutes from where Groff grew up.
The production describes the play as a portrait of an Amish community responding to loss, with forgiveness at its centre. Groff said Lapine sent him the script in 2025 and that its writing and exploration of the tragedy’s aftermath struck him.
The play premiered Off Broadway at the Rattlestick Playwrights Theater in 2009 and has since been staged at theatres around the world.
Broadway performances are scheduled to begin on February 10, 2027, at the Broadhurst Theatre. The producers have not announced an official opening night and say the design team will be announced shortly.
