Kevin Bleyer, who shared four writing Emmys for The Daily Show, died in a car crash on Sunday, October 25, 2026, his family announced. He was 54.
Bleyer’s publicist told The Hollywood Reporter that he was killed while driving on a rural road in Millrift, Pennsylvania. No one else was hurt.
Bleyer joined Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show on Comedy Central in 2005 and remained a staff writer through 2013. He shared its writing Emmys in 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2012, and also wrote for the Oscars broadcasts Stewart hosted in 2006 and 2008.
Before The Daily Show, Bleyer worked on Bill Maher’s ABC late-night program Politically Incorrect from 2000 until its cancellation in 2002. He then wrote for Dennis Miller’s CNBC show during its only season, in 2004–05. His other television roles included writer and producer on Today and supervising producer on Ronan Farrow Daily.
His scripted television work included writing for The Right Stuff, Sleepy Hollow and Significant Others. He also created and executive produced pilots—proposed series’ test episodes—for Disney Television Animation, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and Showtime.
Bleyer’s work also reached presidential speeches. He contributed to all of Barack Obama’s addresses at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinners. He also served for a time as deputy chief speechwriter for New York mayor Bill de Blasio.
His books included Earth: The Book (2010), co-written with Stewart and others; Me the People (2012); and How to Sweet-Talk a Shark (2013), co-written with former New Mexico governor Bill Richardson.
The black, gold and green edition follows September’s sold-out preorders. Nintendo’s replenished launch-day stock also quickly sold out.
