Lawrence Lamont has been selected to direct Last Friday, with franchise co-creator Ice Cube writing, producing and set to star, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on October 27. The appointment brings the One of Them Days director to New Line’s long-running comedy series.
The original Friday became a cult hit after its 1995 release. Next Friday followed in 2000 and Friday After Next in 2002. Ice Cube starred in all three, co-wrote the original with DJ Pooh and wrote the two sequels on his own.
Fellow producers include Bob Teitel, whose credits include Barbershop, and Michael Gruber of CubeVision, the film and television production company founded by Ice Cube. Jeff Kwatinetz, a media executive and longtime business partner of Ice Cube, is executive producer.
Lamont first gained recognition directing music videos for longtime collaborator Big Sean. His feature debut, One of Them Days, was also a Los Angeles-set buddy comedy, centred on two female friends. The $14 million film grossed more than $51 million worldwide.
New Line received an $11.4 million California production incentive for Last Friday. The planned shoot would take place in Southern California, with the following expected scope:
