Netflix will exclusively stream Hindi, Tamil and Telugu versions of every series Bengali streaming service Hoichoi launches over the next two years. The companies unveiled the partnership in Mumbai on October 22, Variety reported. Each new series will reach Netflix in those three languages at the same time as its Bengali debut on Hoichoi.
Hoichoi launched in 2017 and has more than 100 original series. The agreement is part of Netflix’s wider effort to supplement its own original shows with programming licensed from outside producers, according to Variety.
Netflix will also carry 14 existing Hoichoi series, including Madam Inspector, The Curse of Parnashavari, Parineeta: A Love Story and Mahanagar. The selection spans crime thrillers, detective mysteries, folklore horror, social and courtroom drama, and romance.
For Hindi-, Tamil- and Telugu-speaking viewers, the agreement covers a continuing run of new Hoichoi series, not only a selection of older programmes. The companies have not specified which territories the arrangement covers.
Beyond licensing language versions of existing productions, Netflix and Hoichoi plan to develop new original series that adapt selected Hoichoi stories. Hoichoi Studios will produce them. The companies said each adaptation would bring in new creative voices, but they have not announced the selected stories or a release schedule.
The first simultaneous release under the licensing agreement is scheduled for November 6: The Cursed Temple of Kauriburi, a horror series rooted in folklore. More releases are planned over the following months.
