Netflix is reviving the action film “Maelstrom,” with Keanu Reeves set to replace Alan Ritchson in the starring role, Variety said in its October 26 report. According to that report, Page Six Hollywood first reported Reeves’s casting. Jaume Collet-Serra is directing the film.
The project dates back to 1993, when Jeff Robinov, then an agent and now a producer, sold the screenplay to Warner Bros. It is the first project under Robinov’s new Netflix deal.
The thriller follows a federal marshal protecting an arms dealer’s fiancée. She is seeking witness protection as she prepares to testify against the dealer.
The story unfolds over one evening as a hurricane cuts off communication with the outside world and prevents reinforcements from arriving. The marshal and the witness must fight men working for the arms dealer while also facing the storm.
The reason for Ritchson’s departure is unclear. Mark Bianculli is polishing the screenplay from a first draft by the late Gregory Fitzpatrick; a production start and release date remain unconfirmed.

The black, gold and green edition follows September’s sold-out preorders. Nintendo’s replenished launch-day stock also quickly sold out.
