Netflix renews The Diplomat for a fifth season

Netflix renewed The Diplomat for a fifth season on October 29, 2026, two weeks after season four debuted on October 15, The Hollywood Reporter said.

The eight-episode fourth season reached No. 3 on Netflix’s global top 10 in its second week and appeared in the top 10 in 63 countries.

The diplomats at the centre of the drama

The series follows Kate Wyler, played by Keri Russell, as she becomes US ambassador to the United Kingdom during an international crisis while managing a deteriorating marriage to fellow diplomat Hal Wyler. Rufus Sewell plays Hal, who is vice president by season four; Allison Janney plays President Grace Penn.

Janney won an Emmy for best supporting actress in a drama series for her work in season three. Russell won SAG-AFTRA’s Actor Award for best actress in a drama series for the same season.

How the renewal timing compares

The fifth-season order followed season four’s release. Netflix ordered seasons three and four before the preceding seasons had premiered, while the second-season renewal came 11 days after the series began.

Cahn says the story is not nearing its end

Creator and showrunner Debora Cahn, who previously worked on The West Wing and Grey’s Anatomy, said she did not feel the story was nearing its end. Her background in broadcast television, where a season could contain 22 or 25 episodes, made the fourth season feel like an earlier stage of the story.

It feels like we’re in the juicy middle.

Before the renewal, Russell, Sewell and Janney said they hoped to find out what would happen next to their characters. The renewal confirms another season, but its release date and episode count remain unspecified.
