Nico Parker and Sam Nivola have secured the two most prominent roles in Grandgear, Takashi Yamazaki’s first major studio film, Deadline said in an October 26 report. The Sony Pictures project brings together a new leading pair for the filmmaker behind Godzilla Minus One.
Yamazaki wrote and directed Godzilla Minus One and led its Oscar-winning visual-effects team. He is directing Grandgear from his own original screenplay, with Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams producing alongside Glen Zipper.
Parker and Nivola landed the parts after a search that included chemistry tests—sessions in which actors perform together to assess how they work as a pairing. Paul Giamatti is still in talks to join the film; his casting is not confirmed.
Parker received a supporting-actress BAFTA nomination for The Last of Us and plays the female lead in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon. Nivola appeared in the latest season of The White Lotus, and his film credits include White Noise and Maestro.
Grandgear’s plot remains undisclosed. Production is expected to start in 2027.
