OpenAI offers large discounts in reported business deals

OpenAI is offering substantial, customer-specific discounts as businesses shift more of their superintelligence (SI) spending toward it, The Information said in findings relayed by The Decoder on October 25. The examples include a large contract discount, lower costs and more employee accounts for the same bill.
The pricing details follow an already disclosed change in Replit’s supplier preference. In an October 17 article, TechCrunch said Replit CEO and co-founder Amjad Masad had clarified that OpenAI was its preferred partner and ChatGPT its default. Replit had announced an OpenAI partnership in August.
The examples measure different things: a supplier’s share of coding work, a contract discount, a customer’s cost savings and employee access. They are not interchangeable discount rates.
| Customer | Reported terms or change |
|---|---|
| Rippling | CEO Parker Conrad said OpenAI’s share of its coding workload rose from 16% to 52%, while Anthropic’s fell from 57% to 18%. |
| Replit | OpenAI offered more than 30% off a contract worth over $100 million a year. |
| DataCamp | CEO Jonathan Cornelissen said OpenAI’s pricing cut the company’s costs by 80–90%. This is his account of savings, not a general discount rate. |

| Unnamed US bank | The bank, with more than $7 billion in assets, received twice as many ChatGPT user accounts, covering 500 employees, at no extra charge. Its price fell below $7 per user, compared with the account’s stated usual price of $20 or more. |
These figures describe individual negotiations rather than a platform-wide price cut. The contract dates and comparisons using equivalent workloads remain unclear. The Decoder describes OpenAI as gaining some market share at the expense of its margins, while also attributing lower prices to more efficient models and infrastructure. Customer savings alone do not quantify OpenAI’s margin impact or establish a single discount that every business can obtain.
Replit’s preference also does not mean it has removed Anthropic. Masad cited cost, performance and the partnership as reasons for preferring OpenAI to power Replit Agent. He clarified that customers could still choose Anthropic’s Claude or other supported models, leaving users a choice despite the change in default.
